How much does Ortho-K cost?Pricing differs according to you or your child’s degree and cornea shape.
-
Is my child too young for Ortho-k?There is no age restriction for Ortho-K lenses. It depends on your child and your optometrist's recommendation. Children benefit most from Ortho-K treatment if they start at a young age. Parents can help with the lenses too. Contact lens insertion and removal is done at bedtime and upon waking.
-
What happens if i/ my child skips 1 night?Ortho-k is a flexible form of myopia treatment. If your child forgets to wear contact lenses or skips a night, most of the vision correction he or she has is retained. The more nights spent without contact lenses, the blurrier the vision becomes until it is completely uncorrected again. Many children can skip a night without significantly worsening their visual acuity.
-
Are there any age restrictions for Ortho-k?No, it is a treatment option open to both kids and adults :)
-
Is the vision corrected permanent?Unfortunately no. Since it works by reshaping your cornea, stopping lens wear would just mean cornea returning back to its original shape, thus you may still experience blur vision when you dont wear the lenses.
-
Are Ortho-K lenses comfortable to wear?During the first few nights when your eyes are getting used to the lenses, you may experience a slight irritation and itch after inserting the lenses. This is normal and nothing to worry about. The sensation is mainly from your eyelid moving over the lens when you blink. When you go to bed and close your eyes, you will not feel anything and the lenses will not affect your sleep.
-
Can I see while wearing the lenses?Yes, you can see while you are wearing your lenses.
-
Is Ortho-K safe?Ortho-K is a safe form of vision correction when prescribed by a trained practitioner and worn by an individual with due care. Although Ortho-K lenses are rigid, they are made of breathable, oxygen-permeable materials specifically designed for nighttime wear.
-
Would I still be able to have laser surgery later on if I wore Ortho-K?Definitely. Ortho-K vision treatment is temporary and completely reversible. Your cornea shape will naturally return to their original shape if you stop wearing Ortho-K lenses for a few weeks. If you decide to have permanent vision correction at a later date, this will not affect the laser surgery.
-
Who is Ortho-K suitable for?Anyone who wants the freedom of clear vision without having to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day. People with an active lifestyle, fitness fanatics and avid swimmers. Adults who are considering laser vision correction but whose vision is not yet stable enough for surgery, or who shy away from the risks of permanent laser surgery. Children are especially good candidates for Ortho-K lenses - they can see clearly at school and in all their sports and activities without the risk of breaking or losing their glasses or daytime contact lenses. At the same time, it's a great treatment option for kids with progressive myopia.
-
Are there any risks involved with wearing Ortho-K lenses? The risk in wearing Ortho-K lenses is comparable to that of any contact lens. However, the best part about corneal reshaping therapy is that it is safe, non-surgical, non-invasive and reversible. Additionally, no serious adverse events were reported in FDA clinical trials.
-
I suffer from “dry” eyes, am I a candidate for Ortho-K therapy?Definitely! Since you are wearing the lenses only while sleeping, the closed eye state minimizes evaporative loss of tears and may give dry-eye patients suitable vision without compromising the ocular surface.
-
What are the minimum hours I have to sleep with the lenses?Minimally 6 hours, the longer the sleeping hour is, the better.
-
How effective is Ortho-K for myopia control?Ortho-K is the most effective optical treatment for controlling myopia. This is supported by numerous international research studies examining the effects of Ortho-K lenses on the progression of myopia in children.
-
What if I can only sleep for a few hours, such as 3 hours. That’s fine as well. Sleeping with fewer hours does not mean the lenses won't work, it just means that your vision may not be able to sustain for a longer period of time.
-
How does Ortho-K slow myopia progression?During sleep, Ortho-K lenses apply gentle pressure to the cornea, gradually changing its shape over time and redistributing cells within the tissue. While the center of the cornea becomes flatter - which corrects vision in myopia - the central peripheral portions of the cornea become thicker. This change in peripheral corneal shape alters the focusing of light on the peripheral parts of the retina at the back of the eye. This process - known technically as reducing 'peripheral retinal hyperopic defocus' - helps to modulate the growth of the eyeball and slow the lengthening associated with progressive myopia in childhood.
-
How does Ortho-K compare to other methods of myopia control?Ortho-K lenses are considered the gold standard in optical treatment for myopia control, while atropine eye drops are a medical treatment that is also very effective in many children. These two methods act on different pathways in the eye. Since every child is different, one child may respond well to one treatment method, while another may not. The different methods give us more options for treating your child's myopia. Soft contact lenses are also available to control myopia - these do not correct astigmatism as well as Ortho-K lenses, and their studied effectiveness is generally somewhat lower. Children with more aggressive progression may benefit from combined treatment with contact lenses and atropine eye drops.
-
How long does it take to reach good vision? Most patients have rapid improvement in the first few days of treatment and achieve nearly their optimum vision in 10 to 14 days.
-
For how long can I continue with Ortho-K vision treatment? You may continue treatment with Ortho-K for as long as you wish. Children who use Ortho-K to control their myopia usually wear Ortho-K lenses until their myopia stabilizes, usually in their late teens or early adulthood.
-
Can I use atropine together with Ortho-k?Yes. We recommend you to drip atropine eyedrops 30 minutes prior to wearing Ortho-K.
-
Are you doctors? No, we are all certified optometrists who can fit Ortho k lenses.
-
How often do I need to replace my Ortho-K lenses? At AeroV, we recommend to change every 1.5 years to 2 years, depending on the condition of the lenses.
